Take Safety Home: Winter Driving Safety
The National Weather Service estimates that 70% of winter storm injuries occur in the form of car accidents. Have a mechanic check your car thoroughly to be sure it’s prepared for cold, snowy weather. Some car safety tips to think about:
- Check cooling, exhaust, electrical and engine systems.
- Inflate tires to the proper level and check tread depth.
- Check all lights and blinkers to ensure they’re working.
- Inspect windshield wipers and fill the wiper fluid reservoir.
- Carry an emergency kit in the car that contains a blanket, sand or kitty litter, a flash light, water, windshield scraper/snow brush, emergency flares and waterproof matches.
- Make sure you scrape all the snow off of your car or truck, especially the roof or bed. many states have laws that hold you responsible if snow or ice dislodges from your vehicle and causes harm to another vehicle or pedestrian.
- If you begin to skid in icy conditions, don’t slam on the brakes. Turn the steering wheel into the skid until the wheels regain traction.
