Meet Our Team – How Scott Boroi, COO/VP, Started in Health and Safety

My story of how I got into the health and safety business took an unorthodox path.  When I was in high school, I worked as an auto and truck mechanic, and didn’t really know about or consider the health and safety business as a career path.  At the time, my uncle and grandfather were in this business, and had a company that they started called Compliance Consultants, Inc. It never really occurred to me that this could be something I might find interesting.

In 2012, I was working on generators and realized there was a lot to learn about safety.  I often reached out to my grandfather with health and safety related questions and advice he could give me for some of the work I was doing.   Through him, I became more interested in what he was doing and the health and safety business in general.  My grandfather was also considering retirement at some point in the future and was also deciding how to carry on the business he had started.

Health and Safety is in The Family

Around the same time, my aunt Terri (“T”) also became interested in the health and safety business and decided that she would work at Compliance Consultants, Inc. full time.  Terri and my grandfather were very interested and instrumental in setting up the business as a certified women-owned business. Terri eventually joined Compliance Consultants, Inc full -time, and became President and CEO in 2017.

Making a Career Leap

After a lot of discussion and thoughts about my career, I decided to take the leap and make a commitment to getting into the health and safety business with the goal of one day stepping into a role within CCI.  I started working at Compliance Consultants, Inc. and started taking on many of the responsibilities my grandfather had done previously.  I spent time accompanying him on client meetings and learning the business in the field.

Another important step in my path was to go back and enroll in a university and attend evening classes in order to obtain my Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Safety & Health. This enabled me to both work on a degree, while learning the business from the ground up. Eventually, I took over the role of Director of Operations, a role I would hold until I finished school. I completed my degree in Occupational Safety and Health and graduated in 2020.  After graduation, my grandfather made the decision to officially retire. Finally, I stepped into the role of Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, the title that I currently hold.

A Day In the Life of a Health and Safety Professional

As VP and COO, I am mainly responsible for field operations management and regulatory investigations.  I am the primary liaison for our clients and help them with implementing health and safety programs, OSHA representation, and overall jobsite safety management.  I also take the lead on client relations and business development for Compliance Consultants, Inc. maintaining our current client base as well as new client outreach and proposal development.

As we look to the future, I plan to take a large role in growing the overall business and expanding our client reach.  I also see areas for business growth in services like environmental hygiene and infrastructure.  Our women-owned status gives us a big advantage when bidding on government contracts and upcoming infrastructure projects.
